Many writers go to university writing centers for help with academic writing, such as essays and assignments for classes, but what about creative writing? Writing centers, like the Oakland University Writing Center (OUWC), provide an invaluable resource to writers looking to improve their ability and their papers; however, many writers may not consider that the … Continue reading Using University Writing Centers as a Creative Writer
In today’s society, fashion is everywhere and more prevalent than ever before. Being a fashion enthusiast myself, I can’t imagine someone not having some sort of input on the subject. I mean, everyone really does have a style if you think about it, even if you say you aren’t into fashion or don’t care about … Continue reading Read What You Wear
Despite the occasional vague pronoun reference or f-bomb, I've always fancied myself a relatively articulate and polite English speaker (growing up so close to Canada has its consequences). En français, however, I undergo a Jekyll-like transformation from Midwestern Judith Martin to angry truck driver doing stand up for the French navy. A typical conversation is … Continue reading Sappho in Paris: The Poetic Value of Lexical Cosmopolitanism
If you have trouble picking out books then this is the post for you. There are so many good books out there that you can’t ever just choose one, and, if you’re like me, you’ll probably end up just buying the five that you picked up along the way through each isle. Well, this is for those who either don’t know what exactly goes into getting and buying a book!
For a long while now, I've had a strange sensation of wanderlust. A desire to travel that could not be quelled by a short trip to someplace warm and tropical. No, this desire was not for the typical vacation. I don't know why, but I've always wanted to travel to Britain. Could it be my … Continue reading Bill Bryson saved me $1888
Okay, so I wasn’t actually comparing the Lana Del Rey to Margo Roth Spiegelman from John Green’s young adult novel Paper Towns. But it was pretty close. In one of my English classes we were each assigned to lead a discussion on a section of Paper Towns. Since I was going last, after we had … Continue reading That Time I Compared Lana Del Rey to Margo Roth Spiegelman
Film adaptations are wildly popular. People love to hear that their favorite book is coming to the big screen. Although most people leave the film feeling disappointed because the film did not live up to their expectations, it’s a wonderful way for studios to produce money. Are they disappointed because the audience creates visions of … Continue reading From Page to Film
None of us read enough. None of us write enough. I know that I don’t, and I’m not alone. I have been asking my creative writing students how much they would like to read and write, and how much they do read and write. Not one student has replied that she spends as much time … Continue reading How to Be a Great Writer? Turn Off Your Phone. How to Develop a Writing and Reading Habit in an Age of Distractions
When was the last time you played a video game for the story it offered? It’s a legitimate question. How many people bought Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare because of the interstellar story about the rebellion of a colonized Mars, and not because it came with the series’ latest iteration of multiplayer or because some … Continue reading Video Games Need Quality and Inspirational Stories
We are excited to announce and share a peak of our latest volume of the Oakland Arts Review! This summer, the OAR staff gathered to stuff envelopes with copies of the Oakland Arts Review Vol. 2 to send to the artists and writers who contributed to our latest issue. As we begin preparing for our 3rd issue, we are brainstorming ideas to make the Oakland Arts Review accessible to everyone who visits our website. We are working on putting a digital version of each issue online for our readers to access in an aesthetically pleasing way, rather than a simple PDF. However, while that project is in progress, we would like to share the cover and table of contents of Vol. 2 right away!
